Triton 2kW 12mm - 1/2" router 26 Jan 2012 22:29 #63
I could not stop myself from getting this Triton TRB001, 2kW (3hp+) router, when a used one came up for sale at a good price. These routers are among the best you can get, regardless of price. The only objection I have is that they are quite heavy, around 6kg, which is about a kg more than most others in this power range. The table is held by two very stable 25mm diameter rods, with bronze bushings, making it very stable and lag-free. This machine has three and a half ways to set the cutter depth: the normal pinion, the normal fixed stop bar, then also a free moving fast adjustment and one specialty; a fine adjustment worm drive that acts on the pinion gear. You can fine adjust the depth continuously, and very precisely, over the full height range. It also has a soft start and adjustable speed which you really need on a hand router of this size. It also has several good safety features, preventing you from turning it on accidentally. First look; almost new:ish, the base plate hardly had a scratch and there where not many signs of use, some dust, some scratches here and there. I guess this one is 5-10 years old, recent models are yellow in color. On the picture the transparent dust extraction cover and finger protecting cover has been removed for better visibility. As soon as it arrived, a true tool geek needs to find an excuse to disassemble it. This time it was some squeeeeking from the height adjustment and the hight adjustment was not running entirely with ease. A couple of other minor things needed adjustment too. Like all good machines, this one is built to be serviceable. You just remove the two motor carbon brushes, four or five more screws and it all comes apart nicely. All important parts are available as spares. It looks like bearings are easy to change and the motor copper pole ring looks like it can be trimmed in a lathe if needed. It's not nice to have to much grease and oil in woodworking machines as it will eventually form a guey with fine sawdust. So I use Teflon lubricant and very little graphite dry lubricant. It's just very important to keep graphite out of the electrics, as it is a good electric conductor. Now the machine is as good as new, height adjustment runs smooth an the whole machine is probably even better adjusted than it ever was Due to the weight and stability, this machine is often used table mounted and many consider them the best of the best for this. I do not really have a need for a table router and the machine is a solid beast to use conventionally. So I may sell it again and then it feels good that it is i very good shape. |
